About this blog

When I was growing up, Trudy McNall was the ever present electronic chef in the house. Long before Julia Child and the Food Network, McNall served up dishes, first on WHAM channel 6 in Rochester, then continuing as the station became WROC, channel 8 in Rochester, NY. From 1953 to 1965, McNall was there, teaching Rochester how to cook. Her viewers collected McNall's recipes. When my Mother died a few years back, her binder of McNall's handouts became a treasure. I will post them here, as time permits.

All of the recipes are presented as originally published and are untested. McNall's writing style is quite different from what is seen in current cook books. Be sure to read the entire recipe several times before beginning work.

Watch out for the commercials. Trudy included her sponsors in her recipes.

Cooking show pioneer Trudy McNall was beloved by viewers

Gertrude Long McNall is warmly remembered by thousands of area viewers as Trudy McNall, a star of Rochester television's early days. She began hosting the area's first cooking show in 1953 on WHAM-TV, the forerunner of WROC-TV (Channel 8). And almost overnight, her show - Home Cooking - became hugely popular. Over its 10 year run, Mrs. McNall received as many as 60,000 letters a year requesting her recipes.
"Everything she made was wonderful," said Ann Rogers, a friend and fellow local-TV pioneer. "And till the day she died people were still calling her for recipes they had lost."
But in addition to her skills as a cook and teacher, Rogers said, "she was a lovely lady and a warm, caring human being, and that all came through over the airwaves. She was beloved by everyone who watched her."
Mrs. McNall, of Henrietta, died Jan. 6. She was 83.
By the the time her show premiered, Mrs. McNall had extensive training and experience in cooking and demonstrating the craft.
A native of Bradford, PA., she graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1934 with a bachelor's degree in home economics. She worked as a dietician and at several jobs in which she gave public cooking demonstrations. She also studied at Fannie Farmer's Cooking School in Boston.
In 1939, she landed a job with Woman's Home Companion in New York City where she tested and originated recipes and prepared food for photographs.
She married Stephen McNall, a Henrietta farmer, in 1941. Aside from helping to work on the farm, she passed on her cooking and demonstration skills in 4-H Club classes, and wrote articles for Woman's Home Companion and Better Living.
Mrs. McNall appeared twice on Ann Rogers' WHAM-TV morning show in 1953. Impressed, the station management invited her to start the live, half hour Home Cooking. "She was a natural'" said her co-host Ross Weller, who would wear a chef's hat and crack jokes. "She was a very lovely person to work with."
Mrs. McNall would not just deal with entrees, "but with how to assemble a total dinner, and what went with what," Rogers said. So the show became "basic training in cooking" for many young people, women and men.
After the show went off the air in 1963, Mrs. McNall worked as a consultant for food-service businesses and made guest appearances on TV and radio.
Her husband died in 1990. She is survived by two sisters in Pennsylvania, and neices and nephews.
Said Rogers, "There wasn't anybody who watched her show who didn't love her."
